Old School RuneScape players are able to take part in a new competitive DMM Tournament which opens to members this Friday.

The competition is part of Jagex’s contribution the game industry’s #PlayApartTogether initiative.

The month-long tournament will open this Friday (May 1st 2020) at 1pm BST. All players begin with brand new characters and race to level up as quickly as possible. As usual, DMM takes place on a dangerous PvP server and when players are killed, they’ll forfeit substantial progress.

After the opening stages, the top 2,000 contestants advance to the live finale on May 30th, where they will battle it out until only 256 players remain. These last 256 will then take part in a 1v1 knockout until a victor emerges.

Along with the player prizes listed below, Jagex will also donate £25,000 to its three partnered mental health charities – CPSL Mind, The Prince’s Trust, and Rise Above The Disorder – as part of its £100,000 commitment to support their work during the Coronavirus pandemic.

The prizes are as follows:

1st Place: $1,000, The Razer Ultimate Bundle (Basilisk Ultimate +Huntsman Elite + Firefly V2 + Nari Ultimate), Intel i9 9900k CPU, Intel SSD, Intel Swag Bag (Hoodie, t-shirt, mouse mat), 1 Year Old School RuneScape Membership

2nd Place: $500, Razer BlackWidow Elite, Intel SSD, Intel Swag Bag, 1 Year Old School RuneScape Membership

3rd & 4th Place: $250, Razer Kraken Ultimate + Base Station Chroma OR Viper Ultimate + Gigantus Team Razer, 1 Year Old School RuneScape Membership

5th – 16th Place: 1 Year Old School RuneScape Membership

Last year, developer Jagex came under fire when the DCMS concluded its inquiry into ‘immersive and addictive technologies’, citing RuneScape as a particular example, where one player built up debts of more than £50,000 through spending on microtransactions in the game.

While it’s not traditional gambling like that from non gamstop casinos, some video game mechanics have come under fire for prompting similar addictive behaviour patterns in its players.

In more recent news, Jagex was sold for $530m.

To enter the DMM tournament Old School RuneScape members need to log into the designated DMM servers (World 401- 412) from Friday May 1st.
